Workshop of Vitale da Bologna, The Last Supper and Judas' Betrayal

Mid-14th century
Fresco
Pomposa Abbey, Italy

Jesus raises his right hand in blessing while St. John leans into his breast. The man touching John's shoulder has the short, square beard associated with St. Peter. The lamb signifies both the Passover and the imminent sacrifice of Jesus, the "lamb of God."

The next panel in the series is the arrest of Jesus, so the scene on the right here should be Judas' meeting with the chief priests.
